Campaign Impact: Censored Artist Received Flood of Support for Her Cause

After Canada's Harper government intervened to prevent environmental artist and activist Franke James from putting on her European art tour, Ms. James used LoudSauce to bring her art to the streets of Ottawa. For the month of November, Franke's art lined bus shelters in plain sight of the Parliament building, seen by over 1 million Ottawans and resulting in an outpour of press, petition signatures and political support of Franke and censored artists.

To see Franke in action, check out our video blog post from the launch of Franke's art show

Inspired by her art and resulting interviews with New York Times,The Current, and the Toronto Star, Franke was joined by PEN Canada, the Writer's Union of Canada, Green Party leader, Elizabeth May, and thousands of concerned citizens in her call to end the Harper Government's censorship of artists and citizens calling for climate solutions.

About This Campaign

Canada's Harper Government blacklisted Franke James for speaking up for the environment and against dirty oil. Franke's European art show lost a major corporate sponsor due to government interference. She got turned down by Canadian Embassies abroad. On July 30th the show was cancelled. But Franke won't be silenced. She had joined a growing club -- "The Harper Blacklisted Club" -- filled with artists and scientists who want to tell the truth about the environment.

With the help of 55 funders, Franke sent a message to the Government of Canada: Stop blacklisting Franke James -- and stop silencing our environmental artists and scientists! Free speech is a basic right of a democratic country.

This awesome video tells the story from Franke's perspective:
